Bob Brozman & At First Light recording at Down Arts Centre

08 February 2008

World renowned roots guitarist and serial collaborator Bob Brozman has spent an intensive week of collaboration with renowned traditional musicians John McSherry and Donal O'Connor at Down Arts Centre, Downpatrick, resulting in a recording of new material.

Bob Brozman and At First Light at Down CathedralDuring Brozman’s last Northern Irish tour, organised by Brian Carson of Moving on Music, he expressed an interest in working with Irish traditional musicians, possibly resulting in a recording and joint tour. Brian approached Donal O’Connor and John McSherry of the exciting group 'At First Light' to see if they might be interested. Having received a very positive response, Moving on Music set about looking into the funding possibilities of such a project and subsequently was awarded a grant form the Arts Council of Northern Ireland’s Lottery Project Fund to commission new work from this team of musicians.

The intensive rehearsal and recording period took place at Down Arts Centre, Downpatrick from Friday 1 to Wednesday 6 February 2008. When asked why they chose this location, Donal O'Connor responded, “after performing here in February 2007 with At First Light we thought the Centre had an inviting feel, excelent acoustics and that it would lend itself well to recording.”

Moving on Music were delighted to invite Bob Brozman back to play in Northern Ireland as his 2004 tour had been a runaway success. Bob devoted his life to the study and mastery of the Delta blues, Hawaiian music and National guitars, and his wit, energy, and musical technique combine powerfully to create an unforgettable live performance. Bob's familiarity with diverse world music cultures produces a novel blending of rhythmic and timbral influences, unparalleled in today's musical environment. His rhythmic dexterity resonates with elements of blues, jazz, gypsy swing and calypso and his finger-work has been described in world press as uniquely staggering, yet full of humour. His music is best described as a tonic for the senses; warm, sparkling, breezy and irresistible.
